MUSIC

1. Famous Composers

GEORGE ENESCU, one of the most prominent musicians from the 20th century  was  a  Famous Romanian composer, violinist, pianist, conductor and teacher.
He was the teacher of Yehudi Menuhin, who appreciated him very much, and included Enescu's works in his repertoire.
 Some of his invaluable works are: "Romanian Rhapsodies" no. 1 and 2, "Oedip" opera, “Romanian Poem”,suite, symphonies, sonatas for violin and piano, quartets, etc.

CIPRIAN PORUMBESCU was one of the most celebrated composers of his time. The majority of his work (more than 250)  is choral and operetta. The composer saw one of his work, the operetta “Crai Nou “(“New Moon”) performed in Braşov and some other famous works are: “Ballad for Violin and Orchestra”, “Romanian Rhapsody”. He died at the age of 29 in Stupca, the place renamed Ciprian Porumbescu in his honour.
2.Classical music singers
ANGELA GHEORGHIU is a Romanian soprano opera singer that interpreted many roles on the world biggest stages from Europe and America.
She won a resounding success with the role of Violeta  in “La Traviata” at the Covent Garden’s Royal Opera House.




COSTEL BUSUIOC was nicknamed the "Pavarotti of the Carpathians" for his vocal capabilities. He is a Romanian tenor of Romani(Gypsy) ethnic origin. He was the winner of the local immigrant-oriented talent contest called Hijos de Babel ("Babel's children") on 13th March 2008.
3. Light music singers
CORINA CHIRIAC, MIRABELA  DAUER,  ANGELA SIMILEA, MIHAI CONSTANTINESCU are Romanian composers and light music singers that belong to the old generation.
ANDRA and PAULA SELING represent the new generation. Andra was considered “the best singer of the year-2009 and she’s a pop music and R&B singer.

Paula is a winner of the International  Music Festival “The Golden Flag”, Brasov, Romania and she will represent Romania in the Eurovision Song Contest 2010, along with Ovidiu Cernauteanu, with the song "Playing With Fire".


Cleopatra Stratan, born in Chişinău, Moldova is the youngest singer that debuted at the age of three in Romania. She holds the record for being the youngest artist who performed  live two hours in front of a large audience, the youngest artist to receive an MTV award and the youngest artist to score a No 1 hit in a country ("Ghiţă)







4.Light music and Pop rock Bands
IRIS is a well known Romanian hard rock band and Cristian Niculescu is the vocalist

HOLOGRAF is a rock band founded in 1978. During the 1990’s they changed their style in a modern rock.


5. Folk music singers

All the regions from Romania have their own famous representatives of traditional music. Some of them are: 



MARIA TANASE was a Romanian singer of traditional and popular(folk) music. Her nickname’s “The Nightingale” of the Romanian music. She’s the symbol of this type of music.












SOFIA VICOVEANCA is a famous singer of traditional music from Bokovina, Moldavia. She also played many roles in Romanian films and published two volumes of poetry.








PETREUS BROTHERS represent the traditional music  from Maramures. They both sing and play instrumental this music.





6. Folk music instrumentalists

GHEORGHE ZAMFIR, nicknamed "the Master of the pan flute" introduced this instrument in all types of music. He received 90 golden and platinum disc awards and released over 200 albums. He is well-known all over the world playing the special Romanian pan flute, produced by himself.





DUMITRU FĂRCAŞ is a taragato player born in Grosi village, near Baia Mare. He became famous bringing his taragato and the Romanian traditional folk music all over the world.
